Aviation & Robotics Summit Soars into Pittsburgh

Global leaders from airports and airlines worldwide landed in Pittsburgh in late April for the inaugural Aviation & Robotics Summit, an invitation-only, three-day event designed to foster collaboration between aviation leaders and local roboticists.

These industry leaders gathered at the first-of-its-kind summit to discuss the positive impact of robotics on their business and operational challenges. Hosted by Innovation Works, the Pittsburgh International Airport, Pittsburgh Robotics Network, and Future Travel Experience, the Summit consisted of a series of workshops, networking opportunities, and site tours—including one at the Sarcos facilities in Pittsburgh.

On the Summit’s opening night, Sarcos COO Jorgen Pedersen spoke on a panel about the future of innovation in aviation. The panel also included Christina Cassotis, CEO of the Allegheny County Airport Authority, and Sterling Gerdes, general manager of venture & strategy at Delta Air Lines.

The site tours on the second day of the Summit provided Sarcos with an opportunity to highlight the groundbreaking technology we’re developing for the aviation industry, including our autonomous baggage handling solution, designed to automate loading and unloading individual passenger bags. The system, which we are developing in collaboration with Changi Airport Group (CAG), is intended to increase the speed and efficiency of the baggage handling process while augmenting the ground handling labor force.

In addition to the baggage handling solution, our team demonstrated our Work-at-Height Unit (WAHU), which uses our Guardian XM intelligent manipulator robot. This system is designed for numerous at-height tasks for aircraft, including deicing, surface preparation, and ground-servicing applications.

“The Summit provided Sarcos and Pittsburgh’s robotics community with an exceptional platform to showcase our technology to senior aviation leaders,” said Reeg Allen, VP of business development at Sarcos. “Through workshops and discussions, we also gained valuable insights into the challenges that the aviation industry is facing, which will help us to further refine and develop our technology to meet the needs of our customers.”

Overall, the Aviation and Robotics Summit was a unique opportunity to showcase our innovative technology and demonstrate our commitment to helping the aviation industry overcome its most pressing challenges using robotic solutions.
